Because i spent majority of last year preparing my portfolio for colleges and AP art, i've had to limit my style to more of a traditional, technically skilled one. I cut black out of my pallet because it was too heavy of a color. I could only stick to uni-media (opposite of multimedia) pieces. Now that I'm done doing paintings for these people to judge, i'm going to start doing more for myself. Just started a painting today. stuck ripped newspaper and flower petals on there. Used a bunch of black paint. Though it may not be traditionally skilled, i think it's starting to look cool :)

MY CONCENTRATION

Concentration is the portion of AP Studio Art portfolio where the student produces works of art that follow a unifying theme.

In my concentration, I homogenize the hierarchy of the animal kingdom by demonstrating how living creatures, including humans, are restrained. By portraying the restraint and entrapment of living creatures through self-portraits, I put myself at the same level as “inferior” animals and show empathy towards them. Though all are self-portraits, the subject matter is varied and encompasses restraint in abstract, subtle, and literal ways.

Whenever I go to the zoo, I am disturbed by the way animals are caged and isolated.Then I leave the zoo and see horses being forced down busy streets with blinders on their face to prevent them from looking around. I thought of different ways animals, humans, and ultimately myself are restrained. America promises freedom of expression and free will, but living creatures experience restraint without realization because some restraint is accepted in society, such as a woman’s expectation to wear a bra (picture 1). I utilized surrealism because I wanted my paintings to go beyond the literal, and more towards the metaphorical and meaningful. I was inspired by Frida Kahlo because she made surrealist self-portraits and has depicted herself as a wounded animal. For all these pieces, I used paint on canvas boards and painted with a loose gestural style inspired by the figurative painter, Lucian Freud. One of the less obvious forms of restraint in my concentration is in picture 3, where I depict myself in a business outfit. This represents the pressure in the business world and the restraint employees face when set in an office cubicle and tied at the neck as if it were a noose. However, society does not see a tie, or bra, or horse stable as restraining, nor do some countries consider hijabs, or headscarves, restraint either.

i'm so used to associating my phone's alarm ringtone with the feeling when i am woken up in the morning and i hate being woken up in the morning. so when i hear the same ringtone that wakes me up anytime outside of the morning, i have an immediate feeling of a mild headache, sleepiness, and agony. even if i'm already wide awake.

When you're sleeping on your arm and it cuts off blood circulation, and you wake up and it is completely numb. You touch your own arm but it feels like you're holding someone else's arm and it is like rubber. It is so weird and scary, but you're too tired to care and you just fall back asleep.
